Summer Clerk 2015/16

"...I was provided with the opportunity to gain exposure to each of the different practice groups to determine which area of law I was most suited to"

When I was first applying for a clerkship, I found it quite difficult to decide which firm would be the right fit for me. Despite being overwhelmed by the number of options available, it didn’t take long for me to realise that HDY was the firm for me.

Upon commencing my clerkship, I was amazed not only at the technical nature of work that HDY was involved in, but also at the personable nature of those who worked there. I found everyone, from administrative staff to partners, to be approachable, many of whom would come to check on me to make sure that I didn’t have any unanswered questions. Everyone that I spoke to throughout my clerkship seemed to be genuinely interested in getting to know me, something that I didn’t think would be possible in such a fast-paced environment.

Another aspect of HDY that stood out to me during my clerkship was the fact that I was provided with the opportunity to gain exposure to each of the different practice groups to determine which area of law I was most suited to. I was able to rotate through three different practice groups, Commercial Disputes, Corporate/ M&A and Restructuring & Insolvency, where I was involved in carrying out legal research, attending court and drafting correspondence. Some of the standout moments for me involved; assisting in the drafting of a completion agreement for the sale of a business, attending a meeting with both clients and Counsel to debrief after a court appearance and undertaking community work with my fellow clerks at Whitelion.

The firm also organised for each practice group to present to the summer clerks so that we got a feel for some of the areas that we may not have had the opportunity to rotate through. This allowed me to make an informed decision as to what areas I wanted to preference for prospective paralegal and graduate roles.

Although there is an emphasis placed on developing your skills and legal knowledge, it became apparent to me that a clerkship at HDY is also about having fun and getting to know your fellow clerks and co-workers. We were able to attend a wide variety of events over the 12 week period, including the Banking Restructuring and Insolvency Olympics, Clerk Cruise, Trivia Night and a special event to celebrate the end of our training which involved completing the Wild Ropes course at Taronga Zoo. To top it all off, we were given the opportunity to host a 1950's diner themed party on our final night to celebrate the end of our clerkship.

Overall, this experience has allowed me to formulate long-lasting friendships with my fellow clerks and has been one that has cemented in my mind that I made the right choice in undertaking a clerkship at HDY.
