Leanne is responsible for developing the firm's pro bono practice, drawing on her knowledge of unmet legal need from her significant experience as a lawyer in the Australian community legal sector and international human rights to forge strategic pro bono partnerships.

Leanne brings deep knowledge of pro bono and social justice from her work in community legal centres, including the Australian Pro Bono Centre, and as an international legal advisor to the United Nations, including its Human Rights Advisory Panel.

She has established strategic pro bono projects at the firm in partnership with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service and Seniors Rights Service, and completed secondments with the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and the Welfare Rights Centre, where she acted as Principal Solicitor. Her delivery of community legal education with social workers from WhiteLion resulted in the development of a civil law issue identification and referral checklist for WhiteLion's youth at risk clients.

LEANNE'S RECENT EXPERIENCE

  • Refugee Advice and Casework Service

    Established the firm's in-house statement-taking clinic in partnership with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS). Over 40 lawyers at the firm, including Leanne, take statements of claim detailing why asylum seekers subject to the 'fast track' processing regime fear being returned

  • Welfare Rights Centre

    Acted as Principal Solicitor on secondment from HDY, enabling the Centre to continue operation and effectively managing the legal practice to increase the quality of the Centre's legal service provision while a new Principal was being recruited.

  • Seniors Rights Service

    Established the firm's telephone legal advice clinic in partnership with the Seniors Rights Service and Holding Redlich, which provides legal advice to vulnerable elderly people.

  • WhiteLion

    Delivered community legal education to WhiteLion social workers, who assist youth at risk, to increase their capacity to recognise and refer civil legal matters affecting their clients. This led to the development of a customised checklist which was integrated into WhiteLion's case management system.

  • Public Interest Advocacy Centre

    Contributed to the Public Interest Advocacy Centre's (PIAC) mental health and insurance strategic litigation project.
