Summer Clerk 2015/16
"Whether it was a technical skill, a point of law or a little pearl of wisdom...there was not one day throughout the clerkship where I didn’t learn something new"
Nearing the end of a law degree is a scary time – there are decisions to be made and there is incredible pressure to make the right ones. I can safely say that choosing to undertake a clerkship at HDY has been the best decision I have made for my career so far.
Whether it was a technical skill, a point of law or a little pearl of wisdom passed down from a lawyer to help me at the beginning of my career, there was not one day throughout the clerkship where I didn’t learn something new. Of course, I would not have learnt so much without everyone from HDY being so enthusiastic and taking time out of their busy schedules to teach me.
Throughout my clerkship I rotated through the Corporate/ M&A, Workplace Relations & Safety and Commercial Disputes teams. Having the opportunity to rotate through three different practice groups not only gave me an idea of the broad range of work the firm does but also gave me a sense of which area of law I would like to practice in.
Although the practice groups I rotated through were fairly different, at each rotation I was always assured that what I was doing truly mattered. Whether I was conducting research or drafting correspondence, the lawyer would always take time to explain the matter to me and tell me exactly how the work I was doing would be a valuable contribution.
The summer clerkship program at HDY is second to none. The work and the people are truly top-notch. And where else would you finish a hard week of work with the Wild Ropes course at Taronga Zoo followed by an afternoon cocktail at Opera Bar.
