Henry Davis York receives 2007 Pro Bono Partnership Award
Sydney, Australia, 2 November 2007
Henry Davis York (HDY) is extremely proud to announce it has been awarded the 2007 Pro Bono Partnership Award by the NSW Law and Justice Foundation at a ceremony held in Sydney on 31 October 2007 for the unique services it provides to the Homicide Victims Support Group (HVSG). The HVSG is a support and counselling centre for families and friends of homicide victims.
In 2005, HDY developed a program with the HVSG to provide pro bono legal services at coroner’s inquests and provide assistance to them during hearings. Pro bono services have now been expanded to include associated matters such as victim’s compensation, child custody, wills and probate, and civil claims.
The award was received by HDY's Pro Bono Partner Kathy Merrick on behalf of the firm together with Martha Jabour from the HVSG. Kathy stated "We are very proud of the commitment and passion which so many people in the firm have in relation to pro bono and community initiatives. The things we do make a real difference for so many people.
This award is recognition of our dedication to undertaking pro bono work and our involvement in the community which both play an incredibly important part in defining us as a firm."
In presenting the award, the judging panel said "It was the holistic approach to the client’s problem and the complementary nature of the personal counsellor dealing with the emotional issues working alongside the lawyer dealing objectively with the legal issues in this very difficult environment that particularly impressed the judging panel."
HDY was also nominated for its work in providing legal advice to the Homeless Persons' Legal Service.
