John is a leading practitioner in restructuring and insolvency law and has acted for banks, financial institutions and insolvency professionals for over 25 years. He has worked on a large number of prominent corporate collapses and restructurings, both domestically and internationally.
In February 2011, John moved to Brisbane to open Henry Davis York's Brisbane office as a specialist practice in restructuring, insolvency and banking disputes.
He is currently advising a syndicate of eight banks and the receivers of ABC Learning Centres. This includes leading a team of partners and lawyers throughout the firm advising the receivers and managers on all legal aspects of the matter, both in Australia and internationally.
Other recent high-profile matters on which John has acted include advising the receivers and managers of Commander Communications and a number of major financiers to the Allco Finance Group.
John is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of Australia's leading insolvency lawyers including in Chambers 2012 and 2011, Asia Pacific Legal 500 2012 and 2011, IFLR 1000 2012, and PLC Which Lawyer? 2012 and as published in AFR's ‘Best Lawyers' in Australia, 2012. He is also a listed expert in Restructuring & Insolvency in Expert Guides - the Legal Media Group Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers and in the International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, Banking 2010. John is Immediate Past President of the Banking & Financial Services Law Association, the leading banking law industry association in Australia and New Zealand. John was also named as the Insolvency and Reorganisation Lawyer of the Year, Sydney, in the AFR's Best Lawyers' 2011.
