Michael Bampton

Michael has over 17 years' experience in construction, engineering and infrastructure law, advising government, institutional and major contractor clients.

His practice includes drafting and advising on all forms of construction contracts. Recently, Michael has drafted project documentation for the Auckland City Arena, one of New Zealand's first BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) projects, has prepared documentation for freeway construction as part of the Pacific Highway upgrade, and has been involved in project documentation for an infrastructure project (at no public cost), covering the design, construction, maintenance and finance of 26 separate pieces of infrastructure. Michael has also advised a government department in relation to the recent Royal Commission into the building and construction industry.

Michael is also highly skilled in dispute resolution and has recently acted for a copper mine owner in proceedings commenced under the Commercial Arbitration Act concerning termination of the mine operator, for an English bank in proceedings arising from the bank "stepping in" and completing a residential construction project, and for a waste facilities operator in proceedings arising from BOOT projects. Michael is listed as a "Recommended Individual" in PLC Which Lawyer? 2008 for Construction law advice.

Michael is a member of the International Institute of Arbitrators (London), the Master Builders Association, the Building Dispute Practitioners' Society Inc, Building Science Forum of Australia, National Association of Women in Construction, LEADR (Lawyers Engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution) and the Law Society of New South Wales, and sits as the New South Wales Government's appointed legal member of the Architects Registration Board.
