Louise Cantrill
Louise has specialised in insurance law since 1995 and has extensive experience in acting for insurers, insureds and self insureds across a wide range of insurance claims and advisory work. She has significant experience in advising on and defending claims including negligence claims on behalf of many different professional groups (including medical malpractice), directors and officers, public liability, product liability, fidelity and business interruption.
She has advised on a broad range of insurance issues including fraud, indemnity issues, reinsurance policy interpretation, dual insurance, complex corporate insurance programs, excess programs, risk management and compliance matters.
Before joining HDY in February 2001, Louise was a senior associate at a national law firm where she also had experience in business law and general commercial litigation. In 1998 she spent three months on secondment to AMP General Insurance Limited.
Louise also has experience in the area of administrative law having advised various government departments on aspects of legislation and conducting litigation involving prosecutions and appeals of administrative decisions.
Louise's recent experience includes defending a multi-million dollar professional negligence matter on behalf of a firm of solicitors, advising insurers on coverage issues in relation to a complex, multi-party directors and officers claim, prosecuting a large claim on behalf of an insured under a fidelity policy for which the insured has denied cover, and reviewing an international corporate group insurance programme for consistency and coverage issues and drafting excess policy wording.
Louise is a member of the Claims Discussion Group Committee of the Australia and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF), the Australian Insurance Lawyers Association, the Reinsurance Discussion Group, the Commercial Law Association, the Women Lawyers' Association and Financial Services Accountants Association.
Prior to commencing her legal career in 1991, Louise held a management position at Shell Company of Australia, where she was responsible for business planning at both the macro and micro level.
